Laura Tucker-Longsworth holds a Master of Science degree in nursing from the Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing, Loyola University Chicago, where she majored in Health Systems Management, and a Certificate in Nursing Education from the University of the West Indies School of Nursing. Mrs. Tucker-Longsworth is a lifelong member of the Nurses Association of Belize and is the chairperson of the Disciplinary Committee for the Nurses and Midwives Council of Belize.
Laura Tucker-Longsworth is the former Speaker of the House of Representatives in Belize and is the third woman and first Nurse to ascend to the prestigious position of Speaker. She served as Chairperson of the National AIDS Commission and is a past president of the Belize Cancer Society.
Mrs.Tucker-Longsworth is a director of the Healthy Caribbean Coalition (HCC), which is a regional organization that promotes prevention and control of non-communicable diseases in Caribbean Communities.
Mrs.Tucker-Longsworth is the recipient of the Order of Distinction for her contribution to health and nursing in Belize. Other awards include the Paul Harris Award from the Rotary Club of Belize for being an outstanding member of the community, and the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her contribution to Nursing and Community Service. She also received an Outstanding Woman Award from the University of the West Indies Open Campus in Belize, for commitment to the development of women and community through health and cancer awareness initiatives. She incorporates principles of human caring and human rights in all aspects of her service to Belize.
